Jesse T. McCann, MD, PhD, is a board-certified ophthalmologist and vitreoretinal surgeon providing advanced retinal care to patients in Sarasota, Florida. With a unique background that bridges scientific research and clinical medicine, Dr. McCann brings a thoughtful, evidence-driven approach to the diagnosis and management of complex retinal diseases.
Dr. McCann began his scientific training as a polymer chemist, working in nanotechnology with the goal of improving lives through innovation. He earned his PhD in Materials Chemistry from the University of Washington before completing his Doctor of Medicine degree at Albert Einstein College of Medicine in the Bronx. During medical school, Dr. McCann participated in a global health project in India focused on alleviating childhood blindness—an experience that sparked his lifelong commitment to ophthalmology.
Following medical school, Dr. McCann completed training in internal medicine at Greenwich Hospital, part of Yale University, before pursuing ophthalmology residency training at NYU’s Department of Ophthalmology. He went on to complete advanced fellowship training in vitreoretinal surgery at Manhattan Eye, Ear, and Throat Hospital and Columbia University, where he developed expertise in both medical and surgical retina care.
Dr. McCann has practiced as a vitreoretinal surgeon at leading retina centers in Florida. He is board certified by the American Board of Ophthalmology and has participated in multiple national clinical research studies focused on diabetic retinopathy and age-related macular degeneration. His work has been published in numerous peer-reviewed journals, reflecting his continued dedication to advancing retinal care.
In addition to his clinical practice, Dr.McCann remains actively involved in global outreach. He volunteers with Retina Global, participating in outreach missions to Bolivia to help expand access to specialized retinal care.
