About Cataract Surgery

During cataract surgery, a skilled surgeon will remove the natural lens from your eye that has become clouded with age and replace it with an artificial intraocular lens. This process will restore the clarity of your vision and the brightness of colors, improving your quality of life and the ease with which you navigate the world. However, there are two different ways to go about performing cataract surgery – traditional cataract surgery and bladeless cataract surgery.

Traditional Cataract Surgery

Traditional cataract surgery involves the use of a blade to make an incision in the cornea. Our board-certified ophthalmologist will then remove the natural lens and insert an artificial implant.

Laser Cataract Surgery

We also offer bladeless cataract surgery using the state-of-the-art Femto Laser. This computer-guided system allows for precise incisions without the need for a traditional blade. In addition to being non-invasive and more accurate, this type of surgery allows for faster recovery.

Cataract Surgery FAQs

Phacoemulsification is the most widely used and advanced technique for cataract surgery. In this procedure, a small incision is made in the eye, and ultrasound energy is used to break up the cloudy lens (cataract) into tiny pieces. These pieces are then suctioned out, and an intraocular lens (IOL) is inserted to replace the natural lens.

ECCE is an older method of cataract surgery where a larger incision is made to remove the cloudy lens in one piece. This technique is less commonly used today due to the advancements in phacoemulsification.

Some surgeons use femtosecond laser technology to assist in specific steps of cataract surgery, such as creating incisions and breaking up the cataract. While the laser can enhance precision, it may not be necessary for all patients.

Refractive cataract surgery is removal of the lens before a cataract develops, correct large refractive errors like nearsightedness, farsightedness, and astigmatism and thereby eliminate dependence on strong prescription glasses. In all cataract surgeries, the intraocular lens (IOL) that is inserted is selected to reduce or eliminate the need for glasses after surgery.

In some cases, a cloudy membrane may develop behind the IOL after cataract surgery, causing vision problems. This can be treated with a laser procedure called YAG laser capsulotomy.
