Which Contact Lens Solution is the Best?
If you ask your Sight360 eye doctor which contact lens solution is the very best one out there, their answer will be simple: no solution is the best solution. This is one of the main benefits of wearing daily disposable lenses.
Of course, we know that this isn’t always an effective answer for everyone. If you don’t wear daily contact lenses, then you can’t avoid using solutions. So while there are several reasons why no solution is, in fact, the best solution, we have a few guidelines for contact lens wearers when it comes to choosing the best solution.
Chemical Composition and Preservatives
Firstly, we know that there are a lot of contact lens solutions out there that all appear to do much the same thing. Indeed, a lot of them are quite similar, but be aware that not all contact lens solutions are created equally.
One of the main considerations we have when it comes to contact lens solutions is their chemical composition and the preservatives that are used to kill bacteria. Though these preservatives are generally mild, our eyes may still recognize them as a foreign matter in our eyes, and as a result, our eyes might become irritated. Because everyone’s eyes are different, some solutions may work better for some of us than others. When you find a solution that works for you, stick to it.
Contact Lens Brands
On the other hand, be aware that some store bought brands of contact lens solutions may change the composition of their solution without changing the packing. The chemical details may simply be listed differently on the label in fine print. This is a common culprit of irritated eyes for long-term contact lens wearers who develop irritations seemingly out of the blue. If at all possible, it’s probably best to stick with an actual brand. Some of our tried and true favorites include OPTI-FREE, Biotrue and RevitaLens.
Peroxide Based Solutions
Perhaps a better substitute for common contact lens solution is a peroxide based solutions. These are overnight solutions that break down into a non-preservative composition over several hours and tend to result in cleaner contact lenses that feel more comfortable when you wear them again. Because they don’t provide instant results, they can be less convenient, but eye doctors generally recommend these over the more common solutions when it’s suitable. Clear Care is a popular option we recommend for patients interested in using a peroxide based solution.
No matter which option you choose though, the most important thing to keep in mind is that the role of contact lens solution is to keep your lenses clean so your eyes stay healthy. Always follow the instructions provided to you and be diligent when cleaning your lenses.
